Samsung Nexus Ups Ante in Smartphone Wars

samsung-nexus.jpgThe Samsung Galaxy Nexus marks an exciting new chapter in the world of smartphones as the launching pad of Google's much-anticipated Android 4.0 operating system. Code-named "Ice Cream Sandwich," the OS delivers on its promise with tons of features along with a futuristic "Tron" look. From its new "Roboto" typeface to redesigned soft keys, the Nexus interface represents a major evolution from the familiar "Gingerbread" look.
Starting off, there's now facial recognition that lets you take a picture of yourself and use it to unlock the phone. An improved app drawer lets you customize your home screen widgets.

Tap the Internet icon and you get a redesigned browser loaded with viewing options. Surfing on the Nexus is superfast, thanks to the phone's 1.2-gigahertz, dual-core processor and Verizon's speedy 4G LTE network.

There's also Android Beam that lets you share content with a similarly equipped device by touching two phones together.

My favorite new Android 4.0 feature is the improved voice-to-text system that lets you accurately dictate text messages and emails. It's a blast to use and you'll get hooked on it very quickly.

The Nexus' video icon launches you into Android Market where you can rent recent films for a reasonable price. I watched "Colombiana" and it looked and sounded fantastic on the phone's Super AMOLED 1,280-by-720 pixel HD display and 4.65-inch screen. And the phone's audio, with a bass-enhancing equalizer, delivers a rich, punchy sound through quality earbuds or headphones.

Gmail has a new look on the Nexus, with lots of options, and contact cards can accommodate afull-screen picture. Call clarity is outstanding, and especially good through the speakerphone.
